OPI Agreement*

    Please read and understand ALL of the following:
  1. ***IMPORTANT: We will notify you of your OPI date and time through your BYU Microsoft Outlook student email once it has been scheduled. Your BYU email is your Net ID @byu.edu (Ex- gocougs123@byu.edu). Please click here if you have any questions on how to access your account.***
  2. The OPI is requested through the Center for Language Studies (3086 JFSB, 801-422-1201, cls@byu.edu)
  3. The OPI is a 20-30 minute interview that is administered on a land line phone in a private room. Go to 1141 JFSB (the Humanities Learning Resource Center on the first floor) and a BYU lab attendant will place the call for you.
  4. This OPI measures your functional speaking ability through specific communication tasks and gives you an internationally recognized, official proficiency rating certificate from ACTFL (American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages).
  5. The proficiency ratings are as follows: Novice Low, Mid or High; Intermediate Low, Mid or High; Advanced Low, Mid or High; or Superior.
  6. Please arrive 5 minutes early for your OPI. ***Failure to show up for a scheduled OPI without canceling 48 hours in advance (OR arriving more than five minutes late will result in a $60 "NO-SHOW" fee charged to your BYU Student Account.)***

Tests can be scheduled between MONDAY-FRIDAY from 8am-4pm, but NOT during Tuesday devotional/forum from 11am-12pm. Tests are NOT scheduled on weekends, state/federal holidays, or university holidays. A 3-hour available time range is required. The OPI is only 20-30 minutes, but an open block of 3 hours of time allows for better accommodation of your request. (EX: 4/12/2021: 10-4) NOTE: ALL TIMES ARE IN MOUNTAIN STANDARD TIME (MST)
